Good Historical Fiction Authors

Has anyone here read any of G. A. Henty's books. To start off a discussion of historical fiction I can't think of any better writer. Well if you have read one of his books please post your opinion.

I never used to like his books, I always thought they were really boring... Just recently I tried to read By Pike and Dyke, and I couldn't make it.

Yeah, I always found them very interesting. Though, at the time I read them I was in a phase of reading more "classic" books. I can see how you could find it too boaring.

So who else has written good historical fiction that you know of?

Naomi Novik and her Temeraire Series. Very, very epic books.

Back to the G. A Henty thing, the only book I liked of his was 'With Lee in Virginia'. I listened to it on tape. It was pretty good. I don't like any of the other ones that I have heard.

Hmm.... that is one of the ones that I have not read. I read about 8 of them, and I think my favorite one was one called True Grit, but I am not sure that is the name of the book. For a while we had With Lee in Virginia at our house, but no one listened to it.

Speaking of G. A. Henty, I have to read one of his books this week for school. "The Cat of Bubasties" or something like that. I never liked it when I was younger, so we shall see if it is any better.

Okay, I'll let you know. I am hoping that I don't have to read it (because I would fall asleep) but we are not sure if our tape is broken or not. I hope it still works, I hope it still works, I hope it still works...

If your tapes don't work you could always get it from liver box. That way you could listen to a bunch of immigrants pound out the English language while you try to struggle through the story.
